A Wonderful Start to Learning

We look forward to welcoming you and your child to Laburnum Primary School Nursery. Our Nursery provides a warm, nurturing and stimulating environment where children feel happy, safe and excited to learn.

We believe every child is unique, curious and capable. Through supportive relationships, engaging experiences and purposeful play, we help children grow in confidence, independence and a love of learning.

Why Choose Our Nursery?

At Laburnum Primary School Nursery we provide:

  • A caring and supportive environment where every child is known and valued

  • An ambitious curriculum that builds strong foundations for future learning

  • A balance of high-quality teaching and purposeful play

  • Rich indoor and outdoor learning opportunities

  • Strong partnerships with families to support every child’s development

Our Early Years Curriculum

Our Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. Learning is planned around seven key areas:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Physical Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Children develop knowledge, language and skills through meaningful experiences, play, and interaction with caring adults. Our curriculum encourages creativity, curiosity, problem solving and confidence.

Learning Through Play

Play is at the heart of our Nursery. We use a free-flow approach, allowing children to move between indoor and outdoor learning areas throughout the session.

Children explore a wide range of activities including role play, construction, creative arts, mark-making, sensory play and physical challenges. Skilled adults support and extend learning through conversation, questioning and shared play.

A Typical Nursery Session

A typical session may include:

  • Settling in and “busy finger” activities to develop fine motor skills
  • Carpet time for language, maths or phonics activities
  • Free-flow indoor and outdoor learning
  • Snack time and social interaction
  • Story time and topic-based learning

These routines help children feel secure while encouraging independence, curiosity and confidence.

Supporting Learning at Home

Families play a vital role in children’s learning. Simple everyday activities make a big difference:

Reading – Share books daily and talk about the pictures, characters and story.
Maths – Notice numbers and quantities in everyday life, sing number rhymes and count objects together.
Writing & Physical Skills – Encourage drawing, painting, playdough, threading, climbing and outdoor play to develop fine and gross motor skills.
Listening & Sounds – Enjoy rhyming stories, nursery rhymes and listening to sounds in the environment.

Home Learning

Children will regularly bring home a library book to share with their family. Reading together develops language, imagination and a love of stories.

Preparing for Reception

Our Nursery helps children develop confidence, independence and key skills needed for Reception. By the time they move into Reception, children are familiar with school routines, have strong communication skills, and are ready to continue their learning journey with enthusiasm.

Meet the Nursery Team

Our experienced and caring team provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment for every child. They get to know each child as an individual, supporting interests, encouraging curiosity, and working closely with families to ensure children feel happy, confident and valued.

Please ensure that all clothing that your child wears or brings into school is clearly named.

In addition, please make sure that your child brings in a named coat and hat everyday as the weather is often unpredictable.

All children should bring in a book bag daily.

Communication

Please use the Study Bugs app or call/email the office if your child is ill.

Any non-urgent messages, please use Class Dojo to send a message to Mrs Whorrod and / or Mrs Wootton.

Children can either bring in a packed lunch or enjoy one of our healthy, well balanced school dinners cooked onsite by our team of professional chefs.

A fee is charged daily to cover supervision.

When providing a packed lunch please be mindful of the choices. We suggest a sandwich, one portion of fruit or vegetable, a small bar or packet of crisps and a cheese or yoghurt. Pasta, salad or dips are good alternatives too.
