Mathematics
At Laburnum Primary School, we view Mathematics as a tool for everyday life; a network of numerical skills, concepts and relationships which provide a way of viewing and making sense of the world.
All staff recognise that it is their responsibility to design and deliver a high-quality Mathematics education that builds confident, competent, resilient and curious mathematicians who are equipped for understanding the world around them. We foster young minds to be able to confidently tackle a range of practical tasks and real-life problems through making connections between concepts and reasoning mathematically.
When planning Mathematics lessons, we break down learning into granular steps to map a journey towards the end goal without overloading student working memory in the process. This allows us to:
- Model clearly and give children a chance to practice at every step
- Chose a concrete or pictorial representation which serves our intended learning outcome, rather than introducing all of the possible representations
- Ensure that each lesson contains a manageable step of progress for the children from where they are towards the intended goal
- Prevent children experiencing cognitive overload
- Allows those who find maths harder to be able to progress
The sequencing of our maths curriculum follows the White Rose Maths Hub scheme of learning.
