Modern Foreign Languages - French

At Laburnum Primary School, we provide a broad, engaging, and ambitious French curriculum for Years 3 to 6 that aims to inspire curiosity, enjoyment, and a love of languages. Using the Language Angels scheme of work, pupils develop the key skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, alongside age-appropriate grammar and vocabulary, through a wide range of topics and themes.

Our curriculum is progressive and carefully planned, ensuring pupils build on prior knowledge year on year. For example, pupils in Year 3 may begin by learning basic greetings, numbers, and simple nouns, while by Year 6, they are forming sentences, giving opinions, asking and answering questions, and using a wider range of tenses. Pupils are encouraged to adapt phrases, describe people, places, objects, and actions, and use grammar and vocabulary appropriately in speech and writing.

Children are supported to listen attentively to spoken French, respond appropriately, and participate in conversations and oral presentations. They also engage with reading and comprehension activities using authentic texts, songs, and stories, and are encouraged to explore new words and language patterns.

Learning French allows pupils to develop an appreciation of other cultures, traditions, and perspectives, fostering curiosity, respect, and an awareness of themselves and others. It also provides a foundation for practical communication and further language learning.

Pupils regularly reflect on their progress and are encouraged to take an active role in their learning. Through engaging lessons, interactive activities, and cultural experiences, we aim to support pupils in developing confidence and enjoyment in using French, preparing them for future language learning opportunities.
