Physical Education

At Laburnum Primary School, we believe that Physical Education and physical development are essential to every child’s growth, learning, and wellbeing. Our vision is to deliver a high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring PE curriculum that supports all pupils to succeed and excel in a broad range of physical activities. We aim to nurture confidence, competence, and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity, while promoting positive attitudes towards health, fitness, and wellbeing.

Our approach begins in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), where children develop their gross and fine motor skills, coordination, balance, and control through play and active learning. These early experiences lay the foundation for confident movers who are ready to explore more structured physical education in Key Stage 1 and beyond.

To ensure high-quality progression across all year groups, we use The PE Hub to support the planning, delivery, and assessment of our PE curriculum. This ensures learning is well-sequenced, inclusive, and fully aligned with the EYFS Framework and National Curriculum, allowing pupils to build on prior knowledge and develop their skills year on year.

Through our PE provision, pupils will:

  • Develop competence and confidence in a wide range of physical activities and sports.
  • Be active for sustained periods, promoting lifelong health and fitness.
  • Engage in competitive and cooperative activities, demonstrating fairness, respect, and teamwork.
  • Reflect on their performance to achieve personal improvement and celebrate success.
  • Experience challenge and enjoyment, building resilience, self-belief, and motivation.

All children from Reception to Year 6 also take part in the Daily Mile – five minutes of daily running designed to help improve levels of physical fitness, stamina, and wellbeing. In addition, our on-site swimming pool enables every pupil from Reception to Year 6 to take part in swimming lessons every year, ensuring that all children develop water confidence and essential swimming and water safety skills.

As proud members of the East Beds School Sports Partnership, our pupils have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of inter-school activities and competitions. Our curriculum is carefully adapted to support this by ensuring that key skills and knowledge are taught and consolidated prior to events, enabling children to compete confidently and enjoyably.

Our PE curriculum is structured, progressive, and ambitious, supporting every child to improve and take pride in their achievements. At Laburnum Primary School, we are committed to developing physically confident, resilient, and active learners who understand the value of physical activity for their health and happiness—both now and in the future.
