Relationship & Health Education

At Laburnum Primary School, our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) and Relationships Education curriculum supports every child to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to lead safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. Through high-quality, carefully sequenced teaching, pupils learn how to stay safe, build and maintain positive relationships, and make informed choices that promote their wellbeing, confidence and personal growth.

Our curriculum follows the SCARF framework, providing full coverage of all statutory Relationships and Health Education content, alongside optional Sex Education for primary pupils (Year 6). It is designed as a spiral and progressive programme, revisiting and building upon prior learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through to Year 6, so that children’s understanding deepens as they mature.

In the EYFS, PSHE focuses on Personal, Social and Emotional Development, helping children to recognise and manage their feelings, develop independence, and form positive relationships through topics such as What Makes Me Special, People Close to Me, and Keeping My Body Safe.

From EYFS 1 to Year 6, learning is structured around six key themes that are revisited and developed each year:

  1. Me and My Relationships – understanding feelings, friendships, cooperation and respect;
  2. Valuing Difference – recognising diversity, celebrating difference and challenging stereotypes;
  3. Keeping Safe – including online safety, managing risk and knowing how to seek help;
  4. Rights and Respect – exploring fairness, responsibilities, money management and active citizenship;
  5. Being My Best – developing resilience, self-care, healthy lifestyles and a growth mindset;
  6. Growing and Changing – exploring physical and emotional development, puberty, self-esteem and, in Year 6, age-appropriate sex education.

Progression is clearly mapped across the school. For example, in Key Stage 1, pupils learn to identify and talk about feelings, recognise kind and unkind behaviour, and understand personal safety. By Upper Key Stage 2, they apply these skills to more complex themes such as managing emotions, understanding the impact of online behaviour, recognising media influence and navigating the physical and emotional changes of puberty.

Our PSHE and Relationships Education curriculum is closely linked to the school’s core expectations of CARES – Challenge, Achieve, Respect, Effort and Safe. These values underpin all aspects of school life and are reflected in the way pupils learn, interact and contribute to the school community. By embedding CARES across our PSHE curriculum, we ensure that pupils are supported to grow into confident, respectful and responsible individuals.

The curriculum also has strong links with our wider Personal Development provision, which promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural growth and reinforces British Values. Learning is enriched through assemblies, circle time and cross-curricular opportunities, allowing pupils to reflect, discuss and apply their understanding in meaningful ways.

Through our comprehensive PSHE, Relationships and Health Education curriculum, Laburnum Primary School nurtures pupils who are thoughtful, resilient and caring, ready to make positive contributions to their community and to lead healthy, safe and fulfilling lives.
