Physical Education: Moving minds as well as muscles!
All children have regular opportunities for a variety of physical activities which form an integral part of the timetable.
For children in the nursery, physical activities form part of the on-going provision and children are encouraged to enjoy and master the physical challenges that are offered.
In Reception, the children gradually progress from this integrated approach to PE through to more formal PE lessons by the end of the year.
Children in years 1 to 4 follow a balanced and varied programme which utilises the hall, the field (weather permitting), small and large apparatus and the school’s outdoor, heated swimming pool. Children learn gymnastics, dance, a variety of small sided versions of games and problem solving activities. We employ a qualified sports coach to teach the children in years 1 to 4 for one of their PE sessions each week.
The school aims to involve all children in sport and to promote a healthy attitude to life and physical exercise. There is an annual sports day in the Summer term and we look for other opportunities to participate in local and inter-school sporting events throughout the year.
We expect all children to participate in PE sessions and staff work hard to make any necessary adjustments to include all pupils in their care. Please make sure that your child ALWAYS has PE clothing (named) at school on PE days and swimming kit on swimming days. Watches and ear studs should be removed (or taped over) for PE for health and safety reasons. Please also check that any plimsolls are checked for fit and safety. In addition to regular PE lessons, we encourage physical activity on a daily basis. At lunchtime children have opportunities for exercise through play equipment and the adventure trail or pirate ship and we have regular fitness or aerobics sessions on the playground, weather permitting.
